Fixed Film Clamps for Greenhouse: Complete Selection Guide Ø18-Ø40

Publish Time:2026-08-14 12:39:41 Author:Jucheng Views:134

A greenhouse film clamp is a small piece of hardware that carries a big responsibility. Get it right and your covering stays tight through 100 km/h winds, driving rain, and the abrasion of years in the field. Get it wrong — wrong size, wrong material, or wrong spacing — and you will be re-clamping film after every storm, replacing torn sections mid-season, and watching your energy bills climb because the gaps let heat escape. Fixed film clamps are the workhorse of greenhouse covering systems worldwide, and choosing the right ones for your pipe size and film type is one of the most cost-effective decisions in greenhouse construction. Here is what we have learned from years of manufacturing and supplying these components to commercial operations.

How Fixed Film Clamps Work: The Basic Principle

A fixed film clamp is a metal clip that wraps around the greenhouse pipe and grips the covering film between the clamp body and the pipe surface. The clamping action creates a sealed, weatherproof connection that holds the film taut and prevents wind from lifting the edge. The design is simple and reliable: the clamp body has a C-shaped profile that snaps over the pipe, and the film is trapped between the flat clamping face of the clamp and the pipe. Some clamp designs include a second slot for spring wire insertion, which allows you to tension the film further and re-clamp after the film has stretched or been replaced. The key to a good clamp is even pressure distribution: a clamp that squeezes the film hard at one point and loosely at another will create stress concentrations that cause the film to tear.

Matching Clamp Size to Pipe Diameter: Ø18, Ø20, Ø22, Ø25, Ø32, Ø40

Clamp size is determined by the pipe diameter the clamp is designed to grip. A clamp sized for Ø25 pipe has an internal profile of approximately 26-27 mm, which grips an Ø25 pipe with enough tension to hold the film securely without deforming the pipe. Using a Ø25 clamp on an Ø32 pipe means the clamp cannot close fully — the grip will be loose and the film will pull out under wind load. Using a Ø32 clamp on an Ø25 pipe means the clamp is over-stressed trying to close on a smaller diameter, and it will either break or deform permanently. Always match the clamp to the exact pipe size. Our fixed film clamp range covers the full standard greenhouse pipe range: Ø18, Ø20, Ø22, Ø25, Ø32, and Ø40, in multiple body lengths from 50 mm to 125 mm to accommodate different film thicknesses and tension requirements.

Standard vs. Combination Clamps: When to Use Each

Standard fixed film clamps grip one pipe of a single diameter. Combination clamps — such as our Ø25/25/32 or Ø22/25/32 models — are designed to grip two pipes of different diameters simultaneously at the same attachment point. Combination clamps are used at structural joints where two pipes of different sizes meet at the frame, or where the covering film must be attached at a location where two pipes are close together. Using a combination clamp at these points eliminates the need for a separate film rail or additional attachment hardware, which reduces material cost and assembly time. When ordering combination clamps, specify both pipe diameters clearly — for example, a Ø22/25/32 clamp accepts one Ø22 pipe and one Ø25 pipe, or one Ø22 and one Ø32, depending on the slot configuration.

Material: Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Is the Industry Standard

Fixed film clamps are made from steel and coated with hot-dip galvanizing for corrosion resistance. The galvanizing thickness matters: at the film attachment point, the clamp is exposed to UV radiation, trapped humidity, and the thermal expansion and contraction of the film. A thin electrolytic galvanizing coating (10-20 microns) will fail within two to three seasons in these conditions. Hot-dip galvanizing at 45-85 microns provides the durability needed for a full film replacement cycle of three to five years. All of our fixed film clamps are hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, and we also offer stainless steel versions for growers using chemical disinfectants or operating in coastal areas where salt spray accelerates corrosion of standard steel.

How to Calculate How Many Clamps You Need

The number of clamps required for a greenhouse covering depends on the perimeter to be clamped, the spacing between clamps, and whether both sides of the film edge are being clamped. As a rule of thumb, clamp spacing of 150 to 200 mm along the film edge provides reliable wind resistance for standard PE film in moderate wind zones. In high-wind or coastal areas, reduce spacing to 100 to 150 mm. For a greenhouse 30 meters long with a film perimeter of 120 meters (both sidewalls plus both gable ends, excluding the ridge), at 150 mm spacing you need approximately 800 clamps. At 100 mm spacing for high-wind areas, you need approximately 1,200. Always order 10 to 15 percent extra to cover breakage, misplacement, and future replacements — clamps are cheap to order in bulk and expensive to reorder mid-season.

Installation Tips for Long-Lasting Film Security

Install film clamps on clean, dry pipe with no sharp edges or burrs at the clamping point. A sharp edge on the pipe will cut the film from the inside after a few thermal cycles, even if the clamp itself is correctly installed. When clamping film at corners and edges, ensure the film is pulled taut before you close the clamp — a slack film will pool water and flutter in wind, both of which stress the attachment point. Do not over-crimp the clamp: the clamping force should grip the film firmly without compressing the pipe or creating a sharp edge on the clamp body that could cut the film. And inspect all clamps at the start of each season, replacing any that are corroded, deformed, or no longer grip firmly — a few failed clamps can escalate into a full film replacement after a storm.
