This small but critical component is the ratchet mechanism of the greenhouse roll-up system: it allows the film roll to be cranked in one direction and locks it in place, then disengages when you reverse the crank to unroll. Without reversing wheels, a roll-up film system cannot hold the film in its rolled position against wind pressure, and the whole concept of sidewall ventilation through film rolling becomes unreliable. How Reversing Wheels Work in Roll-Up Film Systems
A reversing wheel is mounted at each end of the roll-up bar and serves as both a bearing and a ratchet. The wheel contains an internal mechanism — typically a spring-loaded pawl that engages with a toothed ratchet ring — that allows rotation in one direction while locking in the other. When you crank the roll-up bar to wind the film, the pawl rides over the teeth and allows free rotation. When you release pressure on the crank, the pawl drops into the teeth and locks the bar in position. To unroll the film, you rotate the bar in the opposite direction; the pawl disengages and allows free reverse rotation while the weight of the rolled film and the tension of the covering pull the film taut as it unspools. The quality of the pawl spring, the precision of the tooth machining, and the durability of the bearing seals determine how smoothly and how long this mechanism performs.
Single Reversing Wheel vs. Double Reversing Wheel: Which to Choose
Single reversing wheels (JC-13, JC-14, JC-16, JC-17, JC-18, JC-19) are the standard choice for most roll-up film systems. They mount on one side of the roll-up bar — typically the operator's side — and provide the ratcheting and bearing function at that end. The opposite end of the bar uses a simple bearing or plain bushing that allows rotation without ratcheting. This configuration works well for greenhouse widths up to 25 meters and film weights up to standard PE thickness. Double reversing wheels (JC-15) have a ratcheting mechanism on both ends of the same unit, which means the roll-up bar has reversing capability at both ends. This configuration is used for wider greenhouses where the film roll is heavy enough to cause the bar to twist if only one end locks — the double reversing wheel keeps the bar square and prevents uneven rolling that can damage the film.
Common Reversing Wheel Sizes and Specifications
Reversing wheels are sized to match the diameter of the roll-up bar they are mounted on. Standard roll-up bars range from 25 mm to 40 mm outer diameter, and reversing wheels are manufactured in corresponding bore sizes. When ordering, specify the roll-up bar outer diameter, not the pipe wall thickness. The wheel body must fit the bar diameter precisely: a wheel with a 32 mm bore on a 25 mm bar will wobble and bind, while a 25 mm bore on a 32 mm bar simply will not fit. Use a spirit level when mounting the bearing housing to ensure both ends of the roll-up bar are at the same height. On double reversing wheel installations, ensure the pawl engagement is synchronized at both ends so the bar locks evenly on both sides; an imbalance causes the bar to rotate slightly after locking, which gradually unwinds the film. After installation, rotate the bar manually through several full rotations and observe: any binding, clicking, or uneven resistance indicates misalignment that needs correction before the film is attached.
Maintenance Checklist for Long Reversing Wheel Life
The two most common causes of reversing wheel failure are corrosion of the internal ratchet mechanism and wear in the bearing seals that allows grit and moisture to enter. Both are preventable with straightforward maintenance. At the start of each season, manually cycle the ratchet mechanism — rotate the bar in both directions several times — and listen for any grinding, clicking that should not be there, or resistance that indicates the pawl is not engaging cleanly. If the mechanism feels rough, open the access cover if your model has one and apply a small amount of machine oil to the ratchet teeth and pawl pivot. Check the bearing seals for any signs of cracking or hardening; a compromised seal will let moisture in and the bearing will corrode from the inside out within one season. Replace any wheel that shows visible corrosion on the ratchet teeth or pitting on the bearing race — a worn ratchet can slip under wind load, allowing the film roll to unwind unexpectedly.
Why Quality Reversing Wheels Matter More Than You Might Think
It is tempting to treat reversing wheels as commodity hardware and buy the cheapest available. But a greenhouse without functioning reversing wheels is a greenhouse that cannot ventilate properly — the sidewall film either stays permanently closed, trapping heat and humidity, or it unwinds uncontrollably in wind and tears. The cost difference between a quality hot-dip galvanized reversing wheel and a cheap import is a few dollars per unit, while the cost of a mid-season film replacement after a wind failure is hundreds of dollars plus lost production. We have seen operations lose an entire season's crop to heat stress because a $5 ratchet pawl failed in a windstorm and the film unrolled and shredded.
